Our Work
Turning Shared Values into Durable Community Impact
Rock Advisory Foundation’s work is grounded in the belief that equitable community development requires strong institutions, informed decision-making, and long-term investment. We focus our efforts where we can add the most value—by strengthening the organizations, systems, and physical assets that communities rely on.
Our work spans four interconnected areas, each reinforcing the others and advancing our mission to serve low- and moderate-income and historically underserved communities.
Research & Learning
We conduct and share applied research that strengthens the field of community development and affordable housing.
Our research and learning activities include:
Practice-informed research on affordable housing, nonprofit governance, and community development systems
Publications, reports, and case studies that translate experience into actionable insights
Workshops, learning sessions, and convenings for mission-driven organizations and public institutions
We view knowledge as a public good. By making learning accessible and grounded in real-world practice, we help organizations make better decisions and build more effective programs.
Capacity Building & Organizational Support
Strong outcomes depend on strong organizations.
We provide education, training, and capacity-building support to nonprofits, community development financial institutions (CDFIs), public agencies, and tribal and local governments working in complex community development environments.
Our capacity-building work focuses on:
Organizational governance and leadership
Operational systems and internal practices
Long-term sustainability and effectiveness
Rather than prescribing one-size-fits-all solutions, we meet organizations where they are and support them in building the structures, culture, and practices needed to serve their communities well.
Affordable Housing & Community-Serving Facilities
Where appropriate, Rock Advisory Foundation directly participates in the planning, development, preservation, and operation of affordable housing and community-serving facilities that benefit low- and moderate-income households and underserved communities.
Our role may include:
Partnering with mission-aligned organizations on development and preservation efforts
Supporting projects that prioritize long-term affordability and community benefit
Ensuring that physical assets are developed with integrity, accountability, and sustainability in mind
We approach housing and community facilities not only as real estate projects, but as long-term community infrastructure that supports stability, opportunity, and dignity.
Grants, Partnerships & Catalytic Capital
We support mission-aligned work through strategic partnerships and charitable investments designed to strengthen organizations and accelerate impact.
Our support may include:
Grants to qualified nonprofit organizations
Program-related investments and other catalytic funding tools
Collaborative partnerships that align public, nonprofit, and philanthropic resources
We prioritize partnerships that reinforce shared learning, transparency, and long-term public benefit.
An Integrated Model
These areas of work are intentionally interconnected. Research informs practice. Capacity building strengthens implementation. Investment supports sustainability. Together, they reflect our commitment to building systems that work better for communities over time.
From Many, One.
Our work brings together diverse expertise, institutions, and perspectives in service of a shared goal: stronger communities built on integrity, collaboration, and lasting impact
